GUATEMALA is a Spanish-speaking, developing (third-world) country in Central America with a population of 17.36 million people – 55.1% of which live below the poverty line.
A TYPICAL SCHEDULE while in Guatemala will be visiting with the orphans in the morning and then a full day working manual labor on the orphanage property and visiting with the orphans at the end of the work day. In the evenings, team members are permitted to explore the city of Antigua in groups of 2-3. Everyone gathers together before lights out for recap and devotionals.
LODGING will be at a hotel equipped with fully functioning bathrooms, hot showers and electricity. Team members will be assigned two to a room separated by gender.
FOOD is typically whole, Latin American cuisine and is safe to eat although it is not recommended to drink unfiltered local water. Breakfast is served at the hotel, lunch is served at the orphanage and dinner is on your own in Antigua.
The WEATHER in Antigua, Guatemala stays between the low 50s to the high 70s and humid all year with the most rain falling between May and October. The elevation is a little over 5,000 feet in Antigua and at 7,000 feet at the orphanage, which means your may find yourself winded more easily.
TRAVEL to/from and within Guatemala is fairly straight forward. We take a 4-hour direct flight out of Atlanta into Guatemala City. From there we take a private bus 45-minutes to Antigua where we will be lodging. Travel to and from the orphanage at Casa Angelina is a 1-hour private bus ride each day.
SAFETY concerns are generally low in Antigua when taking appropriate precautions – although mission trips to third-world countries always carry a level of risk. The safety of our team is our highest priority and safety protocols are established accordingly.
